Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Rangers are in the hunt to sign Manchester City enforcer Kean Bryan.

The 21-year-old has never made a senior appearance for the Premier League giants, however he was in impressive form on loan at Oldham last season where he played 37 times across all competitions in the heart of the League One club’s defence.

Bryan has been widely-reported to be heading to Ibrox this summer as Gerrard’s 11th signing, and now the Rangers manager has made it public that he wants to sign the former England Under-19 international.

“I’ve got nothing to say on it at the moment because he’s not our player, but there is an interest,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

OPINION

Bryan played well for Oldham in 2017/18, even though he was playing outside of his natural central midfield position. Usually, the 21-year-old is a box to box midfielder, but he has shown in the last year that he is extremely versatile and can play in multiple central positions. Rangers already have too many midfielders, to the point where Greg Docherty is reportedly going to be loaned out to ensure he gets enough game time. In that case, Gerrard is more than likely looking at signing Bryan to play him in defence. There have been multiple reports that the Gers are interested in the likes of Jake Cooper and Curtis Tilt to add an extra body to their backline. Bryan appears to be a cheaper, younger and more versatile option than them two, so trying to add him to the squad as a centre-back makes more sense than him being used as a midfielder. However his versatility means that he could be covering both positions as a squad player.
