Everton believe that Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck is the number nine that they have been chasing ever since Romelu Lukaku left Goodison Park around a year ago, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands are interested in the 40-times England international, who is now in the final year of his deal with the Gunners.

According to statistics website Spotrac, the 27-year-old earns £125,000-a-week at the Emirates, even though he started just 12 Premier League games for Arsenal last season.

Good move for Everton?

Welbeck has bags of Premier League experience from his spells at Manchester United and Arsenal, however he has failed to nailed down a consistent first team place at those clubs and should be looking for a move that takes him further down the table.

Everton would be an ideal destination for him, but would Welbeck be an ideal striker for Everton?

If he is able to avoid injuries and is started up front every week, then he should be able to find the back of the net more consistently than he has done at Old Trafford or the Emirates.

He is earning a lot of money with the Gunners, but that should not put off Everton, who need a new forward to spearhead their attack sooner rather than later.

Likely to happen?

Arsenal are unlikely to offer Welbeck a new deal within the next 12 months so to avoid losing him for free, they are pretty much guaranteed to want to cash in on him this summer.

Everton desperately need a new striker and given the fact that the 27-year-old is experienced in the Premier League and with England, they are more than likely going to want to make a move.
