West Brom have confirmed that midfielder Sam Field has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the club after coming through the youth ranks at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies revealed on their official Twitter account, as well as their website, that the 20-year-old had agreed terms over a new four-year deal, which will see him committed to his boyhood club until 2022.

The young maestro, who is an England under-20 international and has been with the club since the age of eight, has a total of 22 appearances for the first team, 12 of which came in last season’s blighted campaign as the midlands outfit slipped into the Championship as a result of relegation from the Premier League.

Opinion

With the Baggies now in England’s second tier, they may have to rely on their young talents a bit more as some of their bigger names look towards the exit door. Field, with his 22 outings at senior level, certainly seems like one of those destined to be handed a much bigger role in the team next season, and it will do his development no harm to get some crucial first team experience under his belt. Handing him that four-year contract shows they have faith he can go on to become one of the best players among the senior side, but it should not allow him to become complacent over his future. He has not yet made it at West Brom and has a long way to go before he can consider himself a Baggies star. As for the rest of the first team, they have to make sure they are all pulling in the right direction as they hunt for a return to the top flight.
