Leeds United have confirmed the surprise departure of head physio Steve Megson after three years of working in the role for the Whites.

The Elland Road outfit revealed the exit of the long-serving member of the medical staff on their official website, acknowledging that it was a reluctant decision to let him leave after a prolonged stint with the club.

It is stated that Megson spent over 10 years with Leeds, taking on the role of head physio back in 2015, where he worked with the first team squad.

Senior star and club captain Liam Cooper revealed his disappointment at seeing Megson leave, stating to the official club website: “On behalf of the first team squad I would like to place our thanks to Meggo on record for everything he has done for us all.

“His professionalism and hard work is evident every day and we are all extremely sad to see him leave.”

Opinion

It is never easy to say goodbye to a long-serving member of staff, and the Leeds squad will feel there is a hole where Megson used to be now he is gone. Some might underestimate the value that the backroom staff have on the first team squad but in areas such as medical and physiotherapy, it is important to have a bond between the players and those working behind the scenes. Those out on the pitch have to have complete trust in those managing and working on their bodies, and Megson’s departure, after over a decade of working at Elland Road, means a new man will have to step into the role and try to fill some big boots. Still, that was always a chance on appointing a manager such as Marcelo Bielsa, who likes to bring his own team into a club, and it seems as though the Argentinian’s arrival has resulted in one man feeling that it is not the place to be working at any more – even if the club did want to keep him.
