Sections of Tottenham and Liverpool fans have been urging their clubs to sign South Korean goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo after his stunning display on Wednesday night earned his nation a shock 2-0 win against Germany in the World Cup.

South Korea dumped the reigning world champions out at the group stages after an impressive performance that saw Cho, 26, put in a man of the match display to help his nation keep a clean sheet and avoid finishing bottom of their group.

The Daegu goalkeeper has recent told ESPN that he would be interested in a move to England one day in his career to challenge himself against some of the best forwards in the world.

“I would like to play in Europe one day, and especially in England,” he said. “There you can face the best strikers in the world and really improve as a goalkeeper.”

And it seems that some fans of Spurs and Liverpool also want him to realise that dream, with one claiming that he was “quality” against the Germans.

OPINION

It’s inevitable that fans and clubs will get excited by the performances of certain players at the World Cup, but it’s good to remember that some of these types of signing go wrong. Cho was excellent in a tough group containing Germany, Sweden and Mexico. As it stands, he has made the third most amount of saves as any shot-stopper has in Russia this summer. He looks good but fans should know that he was relegated from South Korea’s top-flight with Daegu last season. He obviously did well enough for them to get into the World Cup squad but just these three games do not prove that he is better than what Spurs or Liverpool already have.
