Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka is interested in signing Uruguay striker Cristhian Stuani, according to the Mirror.

The English newspaper claimed on their live transfer blog on Sunday (10:32) that Karanka is keen to link up with former Middlesbrough striker Stuani, who he managed when he was Boro manager.

The Uruguayan is currently at Girona, where he helped the club finish in 10th place in La Liga, in what was a magnificent season for the Catalan team.

The 31-year-old was in breathtaking goalscoring form last season, scoring 21 goals in 33 league appearances for the Spanish side (TransferMarkt).

OPINION

Christian Stuani had a decent spell at Middlesbrough a few years ago, but few would have predicted he would have such an outstanding goalscoring season in the last campaign. Many thought Stuani would struggle when he joined Girona, a newly promoted La Liga side, but he went on to score an incredible 21 goals in only 33 appearances in La Liga. The Catalan side would go on to comfortably stay in the division, finishing in a mid-table 10th position, but they were also only 7 points from a possible place in the Europa League. After Forest boss Karanka had prioritised defensive signings over the last few weeks, it’s obvious that the Spanish manager would be interested in a player he previously managed at Boro, especially after having such a great season abroad. If the Forest owners are serious about getting the club back to where they belong, they should back their manager and make signing Stuani a priority.
