Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has made an approach to sign Liverpool attacker Ben Woodburn on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The English newspaper claimed via their print edition (Sunday 24 June, Page 88) that the new Gers boss has contacted his former club to inquire about the youngster’s availability.

The report says that the former Anfield favourite may have to wait for several weeks for a definitive answer, as the club debate what is the best course of action for the Welshman’s development.

The 18-year-old is highly rated in Merseyside and has made 11 appearances for the first team in all competitions in his career so far, but he appeared just twice last season, getting just 50 minutes of action on the pitch.

OPINION

Liverpool will know that they have possibly a once in a generation talent in Ben Woodburn, so the next stage of his development will be vitally important if he is to reach his enormous potential. A loan move to Rangers, where he would like up with his former youth team boss Steven Gerrard, seems like the perfect next step for Woodburn’s career. Officials at Anfield will be aware that Gerrard will know how best to manage the 18-year-old, making sure he gets the right amount of game time and improving him on the training pitch. Scottish football will be a lot more physical than the youth team football he’s used to, which should prepare him perfectly for the rough and tumble of the Premier League. The Welshman has the ability to light up the Scottish Premiership and could prove to be one of the signings of the season, should his parent club agree to a move.
