West Ham are plotting a swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard after seeing Everton launch a bid of their own for the Denmark international, according to ESPN.

The news outlet claims that Southampton have also made an offer for the 25-year-old, while Watford are also in the hunt for his signature and are like the Hammers in plotting a move of their own.

Vestergaard was a mainstay for Bundesliga club Monchengladbach last summer with the 6ft 5in (transfermarkt) colossus appearing 34 times across all competitions, scoring three goals in the process.

Good move for West Ham?

Vestergaard is a very tall, powerful defender who is unsurprisingly good in the air and can cause a nuisance when attacking set-pieces – but he is not good enough for where West Ham are going under Manuel Pellegrini.

The Denmark international is by no means an improvement on what the Hammers already have and would very much be a sideways step if they were to sign him this summer.

Pellegrini has already welcomed exciting 21-year-old Issa Diop to his backline and there are much better options out there than Vestergaard, who cannot even get into Denmark’s starting line-up at the World Cup.

Likely to happen?

West Ham have already started to rebuild their backline and Pellegrini is surely only going to want to sign players who can be a big improvement on what he already has – and Vestergaard isn’t.

Everton and Southampton have already bid for him while the Hammers are yet to, so it’s more than likely that he would head to one of them clubs that the London Stadium this summer.
