Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could ship as many as eight senior stars out from Ibrox this summer as he plots a major clearout of his senior squad, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper’s report states that with Michael O’Halloran closing in on a move to Melbourne City, there are seven other names from the first team who are in line to be kicked out the exit door, with a mix of new arrivals and senior stalwarts to be binned.

It is claimed that last summer’s signings Eduardo Herrera, Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso are joined by Lee Wallace, Lee Hodson, Andy Halliday and Jak Alnwick in the firing line as Gerrard sets his sights on improving the squad in a bid to improve on their third placed finished last season and to catch Celtic.

Opinion

There can be little argument that the names mentioned have hardly set Ibrox alight, whether they have been there for 12 months or longer. The club need some fresh faces in but the bloated senior squad will be making it difficult for Gerrard to find space for new signings. He needs to ship as much deadwood out the door at possible and it seems as though O’Halloran is the first of the exodus after his two years with the club. Finding new sides for all of those deemed surplus to requirements might be difficult, especially considering their wages, but so long as he makes a good dent in the list, then some may well be handed a reprieve from the axe. It could well be  along summer for those waiting to find out their fate, but when it is being done to bring in some exciting new stars, the Ibrox faithful will not care much.
