Tottenham have tabled a stunning bid for highly-rated Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Italian news outlet claims that Spurs have made an offer worth £48million for the 18-year-old Netherlands international, however Dutch giants Ajax want bids of £52.4million before they are willing to cash in.

Juventus are understood to be monitoring the ball-playing defender, but Italian clubs may be priced out of a move for him.

Good move for Tottenham?

It will no doubt cost a lot of money to sign de Ligt, but there are few better places than to plough money than into the latest wonderkid to roll of the academy production line at Ajax.

De Ligt is extremely good for his age and will only get better and better as the years roll by.

With Toby Alderweireld likely to quit North London this summer as he enters the final year of his contract, Mauricio Pochettino needs a replacement, and there are few out there that are better place to replace the Belgium international than de Ligt.

Daniel Levy will probably have had a heart attack when sanctioning such a major bid by Spurs, but is one that will have no risk attached due to his brilliant potential.

Likely to happen?

De Ligt is bound to be on the move in the near future and there’s no way a player of his calibre can stick around at Ajax forever.

Gone are the days where Dutch football reigns supreme in Europe and the money that is on offer in the Premier League will surely be too much to turn down.

If Spurs are able to brush aside Juventus in the race for his signature, they are likely to be able to get this deal wrapped up.
