Rangers are expected to announce the signing of Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, according to EstConsultancy.

The club insider, who regularly breaks news and accurate transfer information about the Light Blues, made the revelation regarding the expected timescale of a deal to be completed on their official Twitter account.

Flanagan is a free agent after Liverpool opted to release him from his contract a year early and is wanted by manager Steven Gerrard to come in to bolster the right side of defence.

And there was a suggestion in The Scottish Sun that the Gers will be willing to listening to offers for current right-back James Tavernier exceeding £3.5million with interest emerging from Swansea City if they sign the Liverpool defender.

Good move for Rangers?

Despite a lot of talk of social media surrounding Flanagan’s off-field issues, we think that his arrival at the club is a good move but only if they retain Tavernier.

It would be a huge mistake to sell the defender, who only extended his contract at Ibrox back in February, as he offers so much to the Light Blues all-round play – goals and assists, he is invaluable to the Gers.

This is Futbol verdict: 9/10 with Tavernier / 5/10 without Tavernier

Likely to happen?

A nailed-on deal if ever there was one.

According to the Daily Mail Flanagan has undergone a medical and is on the brink of joining up with his new teammates in Spain where the club are in pre-season training, only a miracle or a failed medical will see this one falling through now.

The 25-year-old will give Rangers a strength in depth that Gerrard has been looking to attain since he arrived at the club – but as we mentioned previously, it is a deal which only works if they keep hold of former Wigan ace, Tavs.

This is Futbol verdict: 9.9/10
