When Craig Gordon suffered a lengthy injury blow back in January, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was forced to make a last-ditch move into the transfer window for Scott Bain – and it was such a successful swoop he has joined the Hoops permanently this summer.

It leaves the Bhoys with three senior shot stoppers – Dorus De Vries joining the pair – but with Gordon’s age and injuries counting against him and the Dutch stopper’s erratic form, it appears as the new arrival could well be the first choice between the sticks when the new campaign kicks off.

Really, De Vries and Gordon can consider themselves to be lucky to still have a future at Parkhead – but could the Hoops pull off a stunning, albeit it temporary return, of one of their former stars to put their hopes to bed?

Sky Sports are reporting that Southampton are willing to listen to offers for colossus goalkeeper Fraser Forster, and with 197 appearances for Celtic prior to joining the Saints, he would be warmly welcomed back to Glasgow.

The Premier League side’s likely asking price will almost certainly rule out a permanent move, but a loan could be on the cards, and the 30-year-old would be a huge upgrade on Gordon, De Vries, and even Bain were he to reunite with the Bhoys.

If Celtic truly mean business this summer, then this is an absolute must of a deal, and would give them a shot not only at continuing their domination domestically but venturing further on the European stage.
