After a season of twists and turns, there were some massive lows and very few highs for the Rangers fans.

A disastrous start to the campaign under manager Pedro Caixinha, which included an embarrassing two legged defeat to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn, saw the Portuguese boss sacked.

If the Gers thought they were in trouble then, they had no idea what was to come.

A failed attempt to prise Derek McInnes from Aberdeen left the Light Blues floundering for far too long to find a new man to take charge, and eventually ended up with youth coach Graeme Murty, who, while he did his utmost to rally the troops, lacked the quality of player or the managerial talent to secure second place in the table, while they also tumbled out of the cups.

It was the defeat to fierce rivals Celtic at Hampden Park which signalled a new low from the Progres defeat, with senior stars Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace suspended from the club after a dressing room bust-up – a major controversy which shows no signs of going away.

The Daily Mail have claimed that both players have been fined – Wallace four weeks’ wages and Miller two – after an internal investigation, but it is said that both will appeal the verdict, meaning the issue will roll on as Steven Gerrard takes the reins at Ibrox.

This is a low point which needs to be buried as soon as possible, for Gerrard’s arrival is meant to be a new chapter in the club’s history.

For as long as Miller and Wallace fight the charge, there will be a dark cloud hanging over Ibrox, and with the latter still officially a squad player, brings that cloud into the dressing room.
