Tottenham are to end their hunt for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha after baulking at their sensational £70million asking price for his capture, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper state that the Eagles are set to offer the 25-year-old a new contract in a bid to ward off potential suitors, improving on the £110,000-a-week deal he put pen to paper to back in 2017.

With that deal in the pipeline, plus Palace’s extraordinary valuation of the Ivory Coast international, it is said that despite Spurs viewing the electric flyer as a prime target this summer, the Lilywhites have made the crunch decision to look elsewhere as they look to improve their forward line, in particular an upgrade on Erik Lamela.

Opinion

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino knows just how important bolstering his first team squad with quality reinforcements is this summer, and with Zaha having dazzled in the top flight for a couple of seasons now, it should have come as no surprise they were in the hunt. However, it seems as though Palace are keen on keeping a hold of their star man, no wonder considering the immense impact he has when he is in the team, and the 25-year-old himself seems happy enough to stay at Selhurst Park. Lamela is by no means bad back up to the likes of Heung-min Son, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen so there should not be any panic that Tottenham have missed out. Really they should be focusing on other areas, such as the midfield and defence, to strengthen this summer, and only once they have the desired reinforcements there should they be thinking about another attacker or two.
