Newcastle United have been handed a major boost in their hunt for Young Boys defender Kasim Nuhu with Tottenham also in hot pursuit, according to Football Ghana.

The Ghanaian football news website claim that the agents of the 22-year-old powerhouse have opened talks with his club over a potential exit this summer and that Newcastle are among the leading sides for his capture, having scouted him over the last 12 months.

It is said that the 6’3″ giant (source: Transfermarkt), who has two caps under his belt for Ghana, could be available for a fee in the region of just £8million were the Swiss side to sell up, and while the Magpies have been handed a boost in his capture, Premier League rivals Spurs and Huddersfield are also keen after his 45 appearances across all competitions.

Good move for Newcastle United?

It all depends on the movement in and out of St James’ Park this summer.

On paper, Newcastle have a handful of options at the heart of defence but behind Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune, only Ciaran Clark has been favoured, with Chancel Mbemba firmly out of favour.

With the former Anderlecht defender likely to leave this summer, it does mean the Magpies are light at the back, and for £8million, Nuhu could well be a smart signing for a reasonable price.

Still, it is a gamble and manager Rafael Benitez may prefer to see some proven Premier League talent come in to help bolster the squad.

Likely to happen?

It seems as though a potential exit from the Swiss side is gathering speed and it will all depend on who is at the front of the queue when they decide to sell up.

Newcastle might be leading their rivals now but with Mike Ashley’s reluctance at splashing the cash, patience could wear thin and another could swoop under their nose.

If the Magpies desperately want him, then getting a deal done sooner rather than later is a must – but nothing is ever simple on Tyneside.
