Leeds United have announced that Paul Heckingbottom has left the club, news which Football Insider reported would be happening imminently, and fans are elated.

The club announced the breaking news on their official Twitter account and website.

Heckingbottom, 46, only arrived at the Elland Road from Barnsley in February following Thomas Christiansen’s sacking and has now suffered the same fate as his counterpart.

There have been calls from fans for some time to sack the 40-year-old who was given the task of improving results after the team drifted from the play off spots down to tenth in the table under the Dane.

However, after finishing the season 13th in the Championship and managing to win just four games in 16, it would seem the eight defeats were simply not good enough for club owner Andrea Radrizzani, who has wielded the axe once more.

There is speculation that the former Argentina manager Marcelo Bielsa is in talks with the Whites, which was also reported by Football Insider, in a move that would delight supporters of the Yorkshire club.

The 62-year-old has not been in management since leaving Lille last November but it is thought he would be interested in the position, according to ESPN.

Here is a selection of responses on social media from supporters reacting to the news:
