Tottenham attacker Marcus Edwards is set to try and force through an exit from the club as he takes his future into his own hands after failing to break into the first team, according to the Guardian.

The newspaper reports that the 5’7″ (source: Transfermarkt) winger, who can also play in an attacking midfield role, recognises that despite his ability and potential, manager Mauricio Pochettino is unlikely to give him the chance to shine over the coming months, with just one appearance of 15 minutes for the senior side to his name.

His desire to leave the club will come as a big shock to many considering how highly rated the youngster is at  both Spurs and the England youth teams, having appeared at every level from under 16s to under 20s, but struggled to impose himself during a loan spell at Norwich City last season.

Opinion

At 19, Edwards knows that he could, and probably should, be playing regular first team football if he is to hit the heights he is expected to, and that is evidently not going to come at Spurs any time soon. He really needed to knuckle down and prove his worth as a senior star at Norwich but that did not go the way anyone expected, and it seems to have set him back a couple of pegs in Pochettino’s book. Still, it seems strange that Spurs would sanction his permanent exit if he is as talented as they believe he is, and if they want to keep him they should be either promising him glimpses of first team football or ship him out on loan somewhere else. However, the player himself cannot be allowed to make ultimatums, for it undermines the authority of the club, and if there are issues with his attitude, then perhaps an exit is inevitable.
