Newcastle United have just one senior left back at their disposal heading into the summer transfer window – and for that reason they must be looking at hijacking Everton’s transfer hunt for Jerome Roussillon.

With Massadio Haidara and Jesus Gamez leaving on a free at the end of their contracts, and Chancel Mbemba firmly out of favour under Rafael Benitez, it leaves just Paul Dummett to fill in the role on the left side of defence – although Javier Manquillo has also been utilised when needed.

Another specialist is a must buy, and snapping up a move for one from under the noses of their top flight rivals would be ideal.

French insiders Euro United claim that Everton and Leicester City have both submitted offers for the 25-year-old speedster from Ligue 1 Montpellier, who is also reportedly hunted by the likes of Monaco and Sevilla.

A pacey full back, he would offer much more of an attacking threat than Dummett does, while also staying as resolute at the back as the Welsh international does with the Magpies.

It is unlikely that Montpellier would be able to demand a hefty transfer fee for his capture, with a contract that expires in 12 months, and that would work perfectly into Benitez’s plans, with a strict budget at St James’ Park.

If Everton and Leicester are keen, then there is no reason why Newcastle should not be among the race, and he really should be a top target.
