Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino has held talks with Spanish side Real Betis as he closes in on a shock exit from the club this summer, according to ABC de Sevilla.

The Spanish news outlet report that the 21-year-old was in direct contact with the La Liga side and that the talks between the two parties was positive over a potential departure from St James’ Park.

It is stated that all that remains to be done in terms of a move is for Betis to agree terms with Newcastle, in what would be a stunning turn of events after the 6’1″ (source: Transfermarkt) maestro arrived on Tyneside just a year ago, and became an important member of the first team squad.

Good move for Newcastle?

It really would be a surprise to see Merino leave the club after so little time, but with the report stating that he is keen on more first team action, it is clear why there are rumours.

He looked good when he first broke into the team at St James’ Park but injuries hampered his performances, and with Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame in such fine form, returning to the starting XI was a tough task.

Still, he looks to have enough potential to be a key player, and only a big-money fee should convince Newcastle to sell up.

Likely to happen?

It seems that this move is edging closer week on week, and if Merino really is desperate to leave then the Magpies might have little choice but to let him have his way.

A return to Spain, where he will feel much more at home, would give him the chance to regain his confidence going forward, and end a difficult couple of years around Europe.
