Roma goalkeeper Alisson is one step closer to joining Real Madrid, despite heavy interest from Liverpool, AS reports.

The Spanish news platform reports that Madrid are inching closer to a £61.6million move for the Brazil international, despite Liverpool making contact about his availability in May.

It is understood that Jurgen Klopp, although being a big admirer of the shot-stopper, believed the fee was too large.

Roma are standing firm over their valuation of Alisson, who currently has three years left on his contract, which is no doubt a contribution to that sum.

OPINION

Liverpool needs some fresh legs at the goalkeeper position. Longtime starter Simon Mignolet was reprieved of that role last season by Loris Karius, who in turn has his own inconsistencies. These were truly highlighted during Liverpool’s disastrous Champions League final, where Karius gifted Real Madrid two goals, leading to some fans demanding a new goalkeeper. Subsequently, Liverpool have been linked with a number of goalkeepers, including Bernd Leno of Bayer Leverkusen, yet their ideal target remained Alisson. After having already spent big over the past six months, it was always going to be unlikely that Klopp would either want to spend, or be allocated the funding to spend big on their new keeper. Roma are not being bullied into a cheap sale, and Alisson’s current contract situation is only adding fuel to Roma’s fire. Liverpool will have to look to other target’s to sure up the turbulent goalkeeping corps, and the extent of Klopp’s scouting is sure to be tested. Liverpool fans are demanding a plug-in player who can start, and win now, but it appears that player is not going to be Alisson.
