Leeds United are closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window as crucial talks progress over the capture of Chelsea midfielder Lewis Baker, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Whites are on the brink of agreeing a move for the 23-year-old after advanced negotiations, with both a permanent move or a loan switch on the cards, Marcelo Bielsa’s side preferring the former option.

It is stated that despite the midfield maestro’s lack of playing time on loan at Middlesbrough last season, with just 14 outings across all competitions, there are a number of clubs eyeing up a swoop for the versatile central figure, but that he himself is keen on a move to Elland Road.

Good move for Leeds?

That remains to be seen, with only actual playing time able to determine whether he has what it takes to be a success.

He managed to make just two appearances for Middlesbrough between September and the end of the season, so there must be questions asked over why that was.

That being said, he has numerous appearances under his belt for England’s youth sides and has even turned out once for Chelsea’s first team, so there is much potential.

A risky bit of business, but one Marcelo Bielsa seems happy to give the green light to.

Likely to happen?

Everything seems to be falling in place and it appears to be just a matter of time until a move is confirmed – be it a loan or permanent capture.

Leeds are keen, Chelsea are open to letting him leave and Baker himself sees the Whites as a good opportunity to further his career.
