Liverpool have given the green light for striker Danny Ings to leave the club this summer despite having tabled a new contract offer for the England international, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim that the 25-year-old has held talks with the club over his future and that, having realised he faces a battle to secure first team action, he will not be putting pen to paper on the deal offered to stay at Anfield, with two years left on his current contract.

It is stated that Liverpool wanted the one-cap hitman to stay at the club, having recovered from a series of serious injuries during his time at Anfield, but the lack of senior game time means that both parties have agreed to part ways.

Opinion

Ings’ time on Merseyside has been riddled with injury and he will never get the chance to show the Anfield faithful just what he has to offer. However, when you have the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane leading the line ahead of you, game time is going to be a big struggle and leaving to rejuvenate his career is the best thing for him. Liverpool are losing a hard worker up front and someone who was quality backup to the first choice stars, and they may well have to replace him over the coming months if they want to have a squad filled with quality in depth. Where Ings heads to next will be of much interest, for there will no doubt have been a number of clubs following his situation with the Reds, and this news could trigger a mass transfer battle for his capture. He needs somewhere that will treat him as the star he deserves to be, leading the line week in, week out, and rediscovering his goal scoring touch that led to his England call up. At 25, he is nowhere near the peak of his game, and this exit will see the start of a new chapter for him.
