Everton attacker Wayne Rooney is in the USA to finalise his transfer to DC United, with an announcement coming imminently, according to Mirror reporter David Maddock.

The reliable journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that the former England captain will be signing an initial two-year deal in the American capital.

Rooney, 32, rejoined his boyhood club Everton after a sensational career at Manchester United, but with the announcement imminent, it seems his time in the Premier League is up.

OPINION

This one has been coming for a while now. Rooney’s Premier League swan song will certainly make for a good film one day, returning to his boyhood club to wear the number 10 shirt one last time. Yet his production has fallen as his age rises, and Rooney is no longer worthy of the lucrative contract’s he has grown so used to over the years. England and Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer will certainly still be able to play a high level of football, but with new boss Marco Silva tasked with slashing the Toffees wage bill, there was absolutely no chance that Rooney would survive. However, as is so often the case with American soccer franchises, they can afford to take on the mammoth contracts, and Rooney can see out his career in the sunshine of America. This could be an indication that the United legend can see his retirement on the horizon, as the MLS is often seen as a place for World star’s to come and earn before they hang the boots up. Many of Rooney’s England teammates did exactly the same before their retirements, and this seems to be the current trend. Rooney will score goals in the States, and lots of them, but sadly, I think we’ve seen Rooney’s last ever Premier League appearance.
