Arsenal are in serious talks with the agent of Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu regarding a £35 million move to club from SC Freiburg.

The agent of the 16-cap international, Mustafa Dogru, was quoted by Turkish Football as saying: “Mislintat [Arsenal’s chief scout] has been keen on Caglar since he was at Borussia Dortmund. He first scouted him back in Germany.

“Sven is interested in Caglar, there are concrete talks, all that remains is a fee to be agreed. We will see what happens next.”

However, the centre back’s agent confirmed that there were a number of Premier League sides interested in his client’s signing, having impressed in Germany’s top tier for Freiburg.

The Gunners will be looking for a number of defensive reinforcements this summer, and new man in charge Unai Emery has already got his first name through the door in the shape of Swiss international Stephan Lichtsteiner.

OPINION

At the age of 22, the centre back has already been identified as a top talent in Europe despite his team’s lowly finish in the Bundesliga in the 2017/2018 campaign. His 15 caps for Turkey show that he is becoming an established international, hence demonstrating the experience that Arsenal so desperately need in their back four. He has the ability to provide stability to a back line that is crying out for a player to solve their defensive woes, which he is more than capable of doing along with gaining Premier League experience. The only thing left for the two parties to do is agree a final fee for the Turkey international, so a move is imminent for Soyuncu’s transfer. The move comes at a perfect time for him, as joining Arsenal will give him the chance to shine at a top level as he progresses to the prime of his playing career. Arsenal paying £35 million for a defender such as Soyuncu shows their intent to overcome their defensive problems and become a dominant force in their back line.
