The summer transfer window might have opened but with all the drama at Leeds United taking place in the dugout, it should come as no surprise that there have been no new arrivals as yet.

With Paul Heckingbottom out the door at Elland Road, the club’s priority will be focused primarily on making sure they bring in a new name who can have a real impact after 12 months of bitter disappointment.

Whoever takes over will likely want to run the rule over their new squad but there will probably have already been a whisper in their ear, if they did not know it themselves already, that the goalkeeping situation is a massive issue.

Neither Felix Wiedwald nor Andy Lonergan were able to hit the expected heights after their signings last summer, the German one of the most high profile flops of a disappointing season, and they were usurped by Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the starting XI.

It looks as though another shot stopper could be through the door sooner rather than later, with Bulgarian website Sportal claiming the Whites are on the brink of sealing a move for exciting 19-year-oldĀ Dimitar Sheytanov.

However, with young keepers Peacock-Farrell and Kamil Miazek already at the club, why another prodigal talent between the sticks is needed, only those at Elland Road will know.

What the Whites really need is a goalkeeper with vast amounts of experience in the Championship, who will be able to perform at the highest level and guide the youngsters through their development.

Look at the goalkeepers at the three sides who were promoted this season: John Ruddy at Wolves (163 Championship, 117 Premier League appearances), Cardiff’s Neil Etheridge (49 Championship, 85 League One) and Fulham’s Marcus Bettinelli (82 Championship).

Experience is crucial, and after Lonergan failed to step up to the plate another is needed to take his place and sort out the major issue which remains.
