Leeds United are set to announce a new contract for defensive revelation Paudie O’Connor in the next week after moving to get terms agreed, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 20-year-old, who stands at a giant 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) at the heart of the defence, will be rewarded for his form after breaking into the first team with a new contract to improve upon his modest wages.

It is stated that an announcement is imminent, with the youngster likely to be looking to add to his four Championship appearances under new man in charge Marcelo Bielsa.

Opinion

O’Connor was one of a few youngsters who broke into the first team last season, primarily through the disappointing displays of more established senior stars. While Paul Heckingbottom will likely be reduced to a footnote in the history of the club, he was the one to give the likes of the centre back, Tom Pearce and Bailey Peacock-Farrell their chances in the senior side, and if they go on to be the successes that Leeds hope they can become, then he deserves at least some credit in their development. Still, O’Connor and the rest of the youngsters face the tough task of trying to impress new boss Bielsa, and he will likely be looking to bring in some quality signings to try and improve in areas throughout the first team. This could well limit their opportunities in the near-future, but with a new contract on the table, the young defender has time on his side at Elland Road.
