Leeds fans are right to be excited about Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager, but they should not expect success.

The Yorkshire Giants should be congratulated on the appointment of Bielsa, it’s an exceptional coup to get him to Elland Road considering his stature and profile within football.

The Argentinian is well-known for favouring an attacking style of play, with the focus on technical football and loads of possession,  particularly in his spells at Athletic Bilbao and Marseille.

Some of the most important managers in football have spoken highly of his methods, including Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, his recent managerial career has been overshadowed by controversy, lasting just 13 games in his last job at French club Lille and only two days at Italian club Lazio.

But beyond the controversy and attractive football, the cold hard facts are that he hasn’t enjoyed a lot of success recently, with his last piece of silverware in club football coming in 1998 when he won the Argentinian league with Velez Sarsfield.

And for all the excitement and hype around his stints at Athletic Bilbao and Marseille, his only achievement of note at those clubs was finishing as runners-up in both the UEFA Europa League and the Copa Del Rey with Bilbao in 2012.

Leeds fans can expect entertainment and to be enthralled by the beautiful football on show, but be warned that he seems to prioritise how his team performs over actual results, and as such his arrival does not in any way guarantee points on the board.
