Wolves are reportedly in the hunt to sign Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand, but should ditch those plans and pull out of the race for him.

The Daily Express reports that the 28-year-old England international is likely to leave the Saints if they suffer relegation from the top flight and that he is valued at £25million.

It is understood that Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle are all keen on landing the left-back, who is on a £80,000-a-week deal.

Wolves have been mentioned as interest suitors in the left-sided flyer and he does have a wealth of Premier League experience.

He won the Champions League during his time with former club Chelsea and is a no-nonsense defender with pedigree.

However, Wolves should consider investing the £25million elsewhere in their squad for improvements and already have an outstanding left-back option

Barry Douglas has been a mainstay in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this campaign and deserves his first taste of Premier League football next year.

The Scotland international has been a key player during Wolves’ march to the Championship title and promotion.

He has proven himself to be vital in the left wing-back role and his attacking quality will be fascinating to see next season.

Douglas has managed five goals and a staggering 15 assists across all competitions this season, numbers that are brilliant for a defender.

The temptation will be there for Wolves to overhaul their squad, but do have a core group of players good enough to make the step up in divisions and finding a new centre-forward over a left-back should be a priority.
