Norwich defender Russell Martin has announced that he has left Rangers on Instagram after his loan deal came to an end.

Martin, 32, joined the Gers on a half-season loan in January and appeared 17 times across all competitions for the Glasgow club, scoring one goal in the process which came against Hearts in February.

On Tuesday, Martin was quoted by the Eastern Daily Press as dubbing the Light Blues as being a shambles when he joined them, claiming that “the club was a bit all over the place”.

However the senior centre-back has appeared to have left on good terms with his parting comment to the fans.

“Was an absolute honour to have the chance to play for Rangers,” Martin said on his personal Instagram account on Wednesday.

“Giant of a club with loads of great people and I really hope it gets back to winning as soon as possible as that’s what the fans deserve.

“Learnt a lot in a short space of time that I’ll take with me in the future. All the best to everyone involved with the club, good luck and thanks again.”

OPINION

Martin was probably the worst signing that Mark Allen made for Rangers in the January transfer window. He was slow, made mistakes and was outshined by either David Bates or Ross McCrorie, both of whom are over 10 years young than him. Martin will now return to Norwich where he is facing a very uncertain future after failing to impress in Glasgow. The chances are that Daniel Farke will try to get the defender sold off on a permanent basis, and there may be some other club in Scotland or the English Championship that would want to take a chance on him. Allen and Steven Gerrard perhaps had the final say in whether the Gers wanted to sign Martin permanently. Graeme Murty stuck with him despite his poor form and it proved costly to his job, especially when there were other options to play. It’s likely that he won’t be the only defender leaving Ibrox this summer.
