Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes have initiated contact with Rangers as they aim to re-sign defender Bruno Alves, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese news outlet claims that the European club has made “exploratory contacts” with the Gers over Alves, who signed for the Glasgow club last summer from Cagliari.

The Daily Record has reported that the Portugal international is among one of the top-earners at Ibrox when he was snapped up by Pedro Caixinha last year, however the 36-year-old’s performances have failed to impress the supporters in the 25 total appearances he has made for the Govan club.

Good move for Rangers?

Definitely. Alves has not hit the heights that were expected of him when he signed for Rangers last summer.

Even though he had years of Champions League and international experience, he has been upstaged by the displays of David Bates and Ross McCrorie in what has been a woeful and forgettable season.

The chance to get Alves off the wagebill at Ibrox is a major plus for Mark Allen and Steven Gerrard, who need whatever help they can get to boost the transfer and wage budget for this summer.

Likely to happen?

It may all depend on whether the Rangers star wants to move back to Vitoria, where he played while on loan in 2003/04 when he was still a youngster at Porto.

There’s a chance that they won’t be able to offer him a big enough deal to quit Ibrox, so it’s hard to see him moving back there.
