Champions League winners Real Madrid are looking to replace Luka Modric in the coming years with Tottenham maestro Christian Eriksen, according to Marca.

The Spanish publication claim on their website that the La Liga side, who finished third in Spain’s top flight but beat Liverpool to Europe’s top club cup title, are looking to repeat history and take a creative midfielder from Spurs, having done the same with the Croatian back in 2013.

It is said while Real will not look to poach the Danish international this summer, deeming it an impossibility Daniel Levy would sanction the 26-year-old’s exit, he is near the top of the list for when they need to replace Modric, who is 32.

Opinion

Spurs know just how important Eriksen is to their future success and Real are probably right in thinking that the top brass would rebuff any sort of approach for his capture. However, they cannot keep him happy forever without challenging for titles and cups, and that will be their fear going forward. Real might have endured a difficult campaign domestically but the fact they picked up their third successive Champions League title shows just how dangerous they can be and it is that ability to drag a title from a disappointing season which Spurs need to learn how to do. With a couple of years until Eriksen hits his peak, Tottenham have to push on and get the silverware the fans and the players so desperately seek, and keeping Eriksen will be absolutely crucial to their hopes. He makes the squad tick in attack, as Modric does at the Bernabeu, and it is clear to see why the Spaniard’s are so keen on signing him in the future.
