Rangers have tabled a £4million bid to try and snap up Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie this summer after his fine form in the Championship, according to a journalist.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon has claimed on his personal Twitter account during a conversation with a fan that the Light Blues have already put forward a seven figure bid to try and prise the 21-year-old away to Scotland.

McBurnie, who stands just over 6’1″, was on loan to Barnsley for the second half of the Championship campaign but despite the two-cap Scotland international netting nine goals in 17 appearances, the Tykes were relegated to League One.

Good move for Rangers?

If the young forward can replicate his goal-every-two-games ration that he showed in England at Ibrox, then absolutely.

The Gers have lacked a properly consistent centre forward and although Alfredo Morelos was among the goals, his tendency to go missing in games, or miss the target too often, means that recruitment up front still needs to be a priority.

Rangers will not be the only club battling it out for the Scottish international though, and Swansea themselves may be reluctant to let him go following their relegation into England’s second tier.

Still, if the Light Blues prise him away, that £4million fee will be hanging over his head, and he will have a lot to live up to if he joins.

Likely to happen?

McBurnie has been heavily linked with a move away from the Swans and it would take some serious convincing to get him to remain in Wales for next season.

The real issue Rangers have is if another side come in for him and instigate a bidding war, for the board at Ibrox will have to be savvy with their spending.

Also, despite his Scottish roots he may well fancy remaining in England and proving himself, rather than heading up north of the border, even if the Gers are plotting the collapse of Celtic’s domination.

It all depends on whether Rangers can get a deal done before anyone else joins the hunt, and it is all finely poised on a knife edge heading into summer.
