Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill brutally ripped into the current Rangers team while giving his verdict on Steven Gerrard potentially being the club’s next manager.

The current Republic of Ireland boss revealed that he thought Gerrard couldn’t make the Gers any worse than they already are, as they’re the worst side to ever play for the club.

“He hasn’t got a clue what he’s letting himself in for!” exclaimed O’Neill, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“He has been born and bred in Liverpool, so he must have an idea. But I hope he does. It would be nice to see him.

“I think he would be terrific for Rangers because unquestionably it’s the worst side that has ever played for Rangers.

“They are so, so bad. They are worse than bad, they are dreadful, the only way is up for him.”

The Scottish Sun previously reported that Graeme Murty has been axed from his position on Tuesday morning after the 5-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic and that talks with Gerrard were continuing.

The Gers officially confirmed that Murty had been relieved of his duties at the club, hours after the newspaper’s report, with a brief statement via the club’s official website, however there’s no official update regarding Gerrard taking over.

OPINION

While it’s unknown whether Gerrard is about to become the Gers’ manager ahead of next season, O’Neill’s words will no doubt ring in his ear. There are a lot of pundits that have expressed their concern about an inexperienced manager becoming the Light Blues’ boss, but O’Neill clearly thinks the side can’t do any worse. While Gerrard will no doubt not want to hear that he is potentially inheriting the worst team the club has ever had, it will be a relief to hear someone of O’Neill’s stature set the bar really low. If the Liverpool legend has any faith in his abilities, then he will feel confident about exceeding the potentially low expectations that will be in place for him, as they will be beatable without much effort.
