There is little doubt that from the moment that Steven Gerrard was announced as the new Rangers boss, the Ibrox faithful have been counting down the days until June 1st.

Moving as a youth coach from Liverpool to the Light Blues’ dugout, there has been much made of the Anfield legend’s move to Glasgow, capturing not only English and Scottish attention but the eyes of the global football community.

Now, the Gers are on the verge of that crucial day, and it is nearly time for Gerrard to show what he has got.

He has already got his transfer business underway, getting three signings on the dotted line before he officially takes the role, and his next duty will be to run the rule over the squad and figure out where else needs strengthening.

To go along with that, he will also have to judge which players are surplus to requirement, and it seems as though a 27-year-old attacker could be first out the door.

The Scottish Sun claim that winger Michael O’Halloran is set to be offloaded after failing to make the grade, with Motherwell leading the charge for his capture after his loan spell at St Johnstone.

O’Halloran made 18 appearances in all last season, with five goals to his name in what was a scintillating start to the 2017/18 campaign, but has failed to register since his last effort against Hibernian, way back in September.

It is not likely that many Light Blues supporters will be disappointed to learn that O’Halloran is set to be one of the players to face the chop in the aftermath of Gerrard’s arrival, and the Gers cannot and should not be holding onto players of the Scot’s calibre if they want to catch Celtic.

There needs to be a major cull at Ibrox this summer, with the likes of Fabio Cardoso, Lee Hodson and Andy Halliday, among others, taking both squad space and wages that could be used elsewhere.

O’Halloran needs to be on the way out, and his exit should signal the end of numerous careers at Rangers.
