When the excitement and elation surrounding the arrival of Steven Gerrard at Ibrox dies down, attention will turn towards the job at hand for the new Rangers boss.

The 37-year-old Liverpool legend has taken on a mammoth task, and one that will undoubtedly cause him endless sleepless nights this summer and beyond.

Major surgery is needed on this Light Blues squad which has failed spectacularly to mount a sustained challenge on Celtic for any domestic honours this season.

The club’s recruitment last summer, which saw them spend around £10million, has made his job harder, with several pieces of expensive deadwood still remaining in the squad.

While names like Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Fabio Cardoso come immediately to mind, there is also a massively successful recruit from last summer who must also be shipped off in the coming weeks.

Alfredo Morelos may have scored 18 goals in all competitions for the Light Blues, which is a massively impressive return in his first season, but he also must be binned alongside his less successful summer signings.

The 21-year-old Colombian has shown his true colours in recent weeks, downing tools when his teammates need him most and proving that he does not deserve a place at such a club.

He spent most of Rangers’ win over Kilmarnock on Saturday walking or standing offside, and seems to have little regard for his teammates.

His priorities quite obviously lie in him scoring goals and nothing else, with the Colombian showing few signs of a team ethic during his time in Glasgow.

While there is obvious talent there, with Morelos being the second-top scorer in the Premiership this season, there are also deficiencies in his game, as illustrated by his miss of the season contender against Celtic at Ibrox in March.

Those shortcomings, along with his stinking attitude, mean that he simply has no place in this Rangers team, and Gerrard must bin him this summer.
