BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that it is “embarrassing” that Brendan Rodgers failed to win the manager of the season award after successfully leading Celtic to back-to-back domestic trebles with a win against Motherwell on Saturday.

The Bhoys lifted the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park after beating Stephen Robinson’s side 2-0, courtesy of two first-half goals by Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham.

St Mirren manager Jack Ross won the manager of the year award last month after winning the Scottish Championship with his side, and it’s clear that Sutton believes that was the wrong decision.

“Funny old game… double treble and Brendan Rodgers didn’t win manager of the season… it’s embarrassing really…must be easy making history,” he said on his personal Twitter account after the Scottish Cup final on Saturday.

OPINION

Ross has done a superb job at St Mirren to get the back in the Scottish Premiership by winning the Championship this season but Sutton is right, winning all three domestic competitions is a much harder task to achieve and Rodgers should have got the award. It just goes to show how well the ex-Liverpool man has done in Scotland when no manager before him achieved what he had since Rangers’ financial meltdown in 2012. Winning everything in sight is expected but to actually pull it off is something else, especially when the Hoops pushed further in Europe this season and played around 60 games across all competitions. There will be a party atmosphere at Parkhead on Sunday for Scott Brown’s testimonial against the Republic of Ireland international side that will not only celebrate the captain’s incredible career in Glasgow’s East End, but also what has been a fine two-years under Rodgers’ leadership.
