Leeds’ capture of West Ham United defender James Collins would be a massive coup and be a huge step on the way to a play off finish in 12 months’ time.

The 34-year-old, who stands at 6’1″ was reportedly informed by the Hammers via email that the club would be releasing the Welshman, despite serving them for 11 years.

It is news that not gone down well with the footballing community who have reacted in disbelief at the way the defender has been handled, but the Hammers’ loss could be Leeds’ gain.

Pontus Jansson has not had the best of seasons and has failed to form a formidableĀ centre-back duo with any of his incoming partners.

With 64 goals conceded – the worst record in the top 15 teams in the Championship – an experienced head is one that is needed if the Yorkshire outfit are going to compete for the top spots in the next campaign.

Now that Matthew PenningtonĀ has returned to Everton, aside from club captain Liam Cooper, who is 26, there is a distinct lack of experience in the position.

Paudie O’Connor is 20, Conor Shaughnessy is 21, and with Bailey Peacock-Farrell just 21 and making the goal his own, theirs is a rearguard which could be found wanting against wilier opposition.

Collins’ Premier League know-how would ensure the defence is not outfoxed and as he is available on a free, the 34-year-old could prove to be one of the signings of the summer.
