Danny Mills insisted that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to ask Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for transfer funds to strengthen his squad in the summer.

The Sky Sports pundit referred to the fact the Argentinian manager had done a great job at the club, but needed money to spend in the transfer market in order to keep competing in the Premier League.

“If you want me (Pochettino) to keep competing with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Man United, you’re going to have to give me some money to retain players and to buy some new players as well,” stated Mills on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily Show (Thursday, 11:30).

Mills was then asked by Sky Sports news presenter Rob Wotton if there were any players that Spurs could realistically get that would improve Pochettino’s side.

The Sky Sports pundit emphatically replied that there were players available for Spurs to go buy and explained his answer.

“Yes, because you need a squad, you need players challenged, there’s not to be a guarantee for a starting place, if their form dips a little bit, you need to be able to take them out,” continued Mills.

“Y’know if you’re gonna challenge on three or four fronts, you’ve got to have strength in depth right across it.

“If Harry Kane gets injured for a long period of time, you would assume, Tottenham will struggle.

“Alderweireld was out for the early part of the season and Tottenham struggled a bit without him, these are key players.

“Tottenham have a fantastic starting eleven, maybe a couple on the bench, it’s a little bit weak, you need competition for places and to push that standard up, that’s why you need to bring in quality players.”

Spurs are still in contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season and are next in action against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

OPINION

It’s hard to argue with what Mills says about Tottenham as it’s painfully obvious that the club can’t rest on their laurels in the upcoming transfer window. Spurs have struggled to match the lofty expectations set for them at the start of the current campaign and there are cracks starting to appear in their squad. Pochettino himself in recent times, since his side’s FA Cup exit courtesy of Manchester United in the semi-finals, has been making bizarre comments that imply too much is expected of his current squad. However even when he’s in a weird mood, the manager will not deny that Spurs have one of the best starting elevens in the Premier League and Europe when everyone is fit. Mills is right to suggest that Spurs need to improve their squad’s depth as clearly it holds them back from reaching their full potential, and no one wants to see that happen. So hopefully Pochettino has a chat with Levy very shortly about transfer plans.
