Leeds United are in hot pursuit of Blackburn Rovers’ young defender Jake Garrett but face a fight with top flight giants Manchester United for his signing, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster have stated on their website that the 15-year-old sensation has become the centre of a transfer hunt for a number of top teams across England, having impressed at under-18 level for Rovers.

Leeds are said to be joined by Premier League sides United, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Watford as well as Championship rivals Derby County and Fulham, with preparations made to try and prise the youngster away from the side which finished second in League One.

His displays for both club and country, having turned out for England’s under-15s, have seen Manchester United tip him as a future star, and that the Red Devils want him to join in a bid to improve their youth sides.

Good move for Leeds?

Looking at how highly rated the young talent is, it would certainly be a good move for the future – but what they really need is proven talent for the here and now.

The Whites have established a reputation of developing bright young starlets into first team ready players and the same would likely apply to Garrett, who seems to have a bright future ahead of him.

Still, spending time working on a deal for a 15-year-old means less time in strengthening the first team and priorities have to be made.

Yes, he would be a good signing and if a deal can be completed easily, then it should be done, but no time can be wasted this summer as a rebuild from the disappointing campaign takes place.

Likely to happen?

Not if the Premier League sides are serious about taking him on this summer.

The Whites may be able to put forward an argument that they have a proven record when it comes to bringing youngsters through the system but the sort of money and opportunities the other sides can offer are far beyond those at Leeds.

If he is wanting senior game time sooner rather than later, then Leeds could be the answer.

Otherwise, he is unlikely to head to Elland Road over the coming months.
