Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to tear into Alan Hutton for his performance in the 1-0 play-off final defeat to Fulham at Wembley on Saturday evening.
Steve Bruce’s side missed out on the chance for promotion back to the Premier League against 10-man Fulham, who snatched a vital win courtesy of a first-half goal by Tom Cairney.
Denis Odoi was shown a second yellow card in the 70th minute after Villa rallied in the second-half, but it was not enough for the West Midlands club, who will now spend their third season in a row outside of the Premier League.
Villa fans were raging after the game and took to social media to slam senior player Hutton for his role in the one-goal defeat.
One supporter claimed that the club should “get rid” of the defender.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
No idea how we will line up next season now. Surely finally we can use our youngsters for a change? They had a great season. Get rid of Hutton et al and anyone who doesn’t want to be there #avfc

Steve Bruce needs to change this system. Too flat in the middle, nothing up top, Hutton out of position and poornib the tackles, unorganised at the back. No player standing out yet. Really poor. Change it. Come on Villa. Show some courage #utv #avfc

Hutton has been back to his usual uselessness. Grabban has not been involved. Adamah a shadow of himself. Hourihane back to being invisible. Bruce has his work cut out in this one. #avfc

Hutton’s contract is due to expire at the end of next month and Bruce has offered hints that the former Rangers and Tottenham man will be offered a new deal to extend his stay at Villa Park.
The Scottish full-back made 33 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa this season.
He joined the West Midlands club seven years ago and has appeared in 168 total games.
