Tottenham are interested in signing midfielder Milan Badelj from Italian top-flight club Fiorentina, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian news outlet claims that Spurs are “monitoring” the 29-year-old, who currently plays for a Fiorentina side that are mid-table in Serie A.

It is understood they will face competition from AC Milan for his signature as they are preparing to pounce for the defensive midfielder.

The report details that the Croatia international has always wanted to leave when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Good move for Spurs?

Badelj is an experienced defensive midfielder that has been linked with the Premier League in the past and would surely be a good fit to English football.

The Croatian is an enforcer that helps protect the back four, but is also technically gifted and can spray a pass.

Spurs could perhaps do with a new midfield signing in the summer, but Badelj is hardly an upgrade on any of their options and this deal has perhaps come a couple of years too late for the 29-year-old..

However, it would be difficult for Pochettino to turn his nose up at a free transfer and he could be a cute option.

Likely to happen?

Badelj looks likely to leave Florence as it stands when his deal expires and it would be no surprise to watch AC swoop in for him.

However, Spurs are now an extremely attractive force in Europe for players given their rise in the last few years.
