Rangers are in talks with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard over becoming the club’s next manager, according to The Sun.

The newspaper report that a stunning deal is close with talks between the two parties still ongoing, as Rangers director of football Mark Allen leads discussions for the club.

The Sun claim that the 37-year-old is unfazed by the size of the task at Rangers despite having no senior managerial experience, with Gerrard spending one season in charge of Liverpool’s Under-18s.

Rangers chairman Dave King was spotted at Anfield taking in the Reds’ 5-2 win over Roma in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, with Gerrard also in attendance as a pundit for BT Sport.

If Gerrard is appointed as manager he will go face-to-face with his former boss Brendan Rodgers, with the duo almost winning the Premier League title together in 2013/14.

OPINION

Wow. What a massive decision this would be from the Rangers board. Just when you think the club need a steady, experienced hand to lead them out of this mess, they plump for someone with no senior experience. This will go one of two ways: Gerrard will be a revelation, or Gerrard will be a flop. If it is the latter then you cannot see this Rangers board surviving for much longer, with the mistakes in appointing the wrong people mounting up.
