Kris Boyd believes Rangers director of football Mark Allen cannot allow Graeme Murty to return to being the under-20 manager at the club.

The former Gers forward claimed that Murty was as good as finished at the Gers if he wasn’t kept on as first-team manager, as whoever replaced him wouldn’t want him near by.

“Murty is as good as finished at Rangers now,” wrote Boyd in his column for the Scottish Sun.

“The talk was that he was going to return to the youth department as Under-20s boss if he wasn’t kept on as manager.

“But that can’t happen any longer, the new manager can’t have the old manager working 50 yards along the corridor, no way.

“But that might be another one for the magic man, Allen, to fix.”

Murty’s position as Gers manager looks in jeopardy as his side have only won one of their last five games across all competitions.

During this terrible run of form, the Light Blues have slumped to two defeats courtesy of their bitter rivals Celtic, with their last result being an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brendan Rodger’s side.

At the start of the season, Murty was managing the Gers’ U-20s side but was made interim manager of the first-team team after former boss Pedro Caixinha left the club in October.

The 43-year-old was then confirmed to be the Gers’ manager until the end of the season in December, as reported by the BBC, after guiding his side to six wins in his first nine games.

OPINION

It’s hard to argue with Boyd’s logic that Murty is done at the club, but it is such a shame. While the 43-year-old is clearly not the right man to guide the first-team forward in the near future, it’s harsh that he will potentially have no role at the club. It is still possible that Murty will return to being Under-20s manager but Boyd is right; no manager wants their predecessor hanging around. Allen faces a tough decision over choosing what to do with Murty as the 43-year-old has done nothing but try his best for the club. However the current director of football knows that he has do what is in the first-team’s best interests.
