Former Celtic ace Chris Sutton has hilariously claimed that the Rangers defence made Hoops striker Odsonne Edouard ‘look like Pele’ during their 5-0 win in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

The 20-year-old French loanee opened the scoring for Celtic after just 13 minutes with a simple finish before turning on the style with a run and shot which doubled his tally and their lead.

Sutton has now delivered a brutal verdict on the state of the Rangers defence, and said Celtic should look to snap Edouard up for the touted £7million fee from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

In a column for the Daily Record, he said: “I was surprised at the decision to throw in Odsonne Edouard before Leigh Griffiths. But he stepped up to the plate. Mind you, if Griffiths had been leading the line it might have been eight or nine…It could have been anyway if it wasn’t for Jak Alnwick. Rangers couldn’t handle Tom Rogic and James Forrest, while Olivier Ntcham and Kieran Tierney were superb.

“Edouard proved me wrong but that Rangers defence made him look like Pele. He’s raw but has plenty of potential and if Celtic can get him for £7m it would be a good bit of business.”

Sutton did however go on to admit that he holds some worries about the summer ahead for the Hoops, who have a few key players that may leave.

“I still have some concerns with Rogic’s new deal not yet signed, Moussa Dembele’s future uncertain and Patrick Roberts on his way at the end of the season. Those are issues for another day though as Celtic were sensational,” he said.

OPINION

The Rangers defence did indeed allow Edouard look brilliant on Sunday, but let’s not take away from his performance. The young striker was at it all day for the Hoops, and was unlucky to be denied the chance at an Old Firm hat-trick when subbed off in the second-half. Sutton’s claim that it could have been eight or nine with Griffiths leading the line is actually doubtful considering the Scot’s recent returns since coming back from injury. The one chance that Griffiths got on Sunday he skied over the bar, and Edouard was clearly the right choice from Rodgers.
