Gary Lineker has congratulated Wolves on Twitter for a “brilliant season” after their promotion to the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday evening.

They will be playing top-flight football in the 2018/19 campaign after securing automatic promotion and also look set to lift the Championship title in the process.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side host Birmingham on Sunday in the league, but Fulham’s slip-up against Brentford on Saturday sealed their fate.

Neal Maupay netted a 94th minute strike for Brentford to draw 1-1 away at third-placed Fulham, meaning the latter can no longer catch Wolves.

Lineker took to social media to praise Wolves for their achievements and the Midlands giants will be competing in the Premier League for the first time since 2012.

“Congratulations to Wolves on their promotion to the Premier League. A brilliant season. Look forward to introducing your on Match of the Day next season,” Lineker wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Wolves have rightfully secured a return to the top flight after their six-year absence and have the potential to compete at a high level if they strengthen well in the summer. They have been the standout player in the Championship across the season and played an attractive brand of football. They have several key players that look ready to make the step up to the Premier League, with Ruben Neves being top of that list. The midfielder has looked out of place in England’s second-tier and has the quality to make an impact next season. Wolves will be keen to wrap up the title ahead of second-placed Cardiff, but ultimately they have done everything asked of them this season.
