West Ham are keen on signing Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claims that the Hammers, along with fellow Premier League clubs Everton and Leicester City, are monitoring the 25-year-old centre-back’s situation.

Sky Sports report that Middlesbrough, who currently sit fifth in the Championship, Gibson as being worth £20million.

It is believed that the enforcer could yet opt to stay at Boro if they gain promotion back to the Premier League.

Gibson, who is his side’s current captain, has impressed many with his performances over the last two seasons, and he’s known for his ability to shield the ball.

Good move for West Ham?

It’s not the worst move, but the £20million price tag is concerning.

Gibson has impressed in the 47 appearances he has made for Boro this season and his ability was proven when he was called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate last season.

However while the Hammers need new central defenders, preferably ones under the age of 30 like Gibson, the 25-year-old is not £20million worth of talent.

The centre-back may have done an adequate job for Boro in the Premier League in the 2016/17 season, but he hardly stood out as a defender who could help a top-flight side climb the table.

Likely to happen?

No.

Gibson is contracted to stay at the Riverside until 2022 and there’s no reason to suggest he will be quick to move even if they stay in the Championship.

Sky Sports’ report shares that the Foxes made an approach for Gibson in the last two windows only to be unsuccessful, so it’s hard to see why Boro will be willing to let him go anytime soon.

The Northern club could assure the defender that they will go all out to win promotion next season if they don’t successfully reach the Premier League by the end of the current campaign.
