Alan Shearer suggested that senior duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli would both be considering their options after Tottenham crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Match of the Day pundit slammed Spurs for losing 2-1 to Manchester United in their FA Cup semi-final, as it confirmed that they would go another season without winning a trophy.

Shearer suggested many reasons why Mauricio Pochettino’s side failed to reach the FA Cup final this season before coming to the conclusion that they were simply not good enough.

“There can only be so many near misses before you realise that perhaps this much-vaunted side and manager is not at all that,” wrote the pundit in his column for The Sun.

“Saturday pretty much encapsulated Spurs — they are just not good enough.”

After revealing his thoughts on Saturday’s game, Shearer questioned the futures of both Kane and Alli at the club as he claimed that the pair would be considering their options after missing out on yet another trophy.

“Tottenham is Kane’s club how long can he resist temptation from elsewhere to turn his ability in front of goal into medals?” questioned Shearer.

“Because it is not happening at Spurs anytime soon.

“Dele Alli, who scored an excellent opener, will undoubtedly be considering his options too.

“It is sad — but I fear Spurs have missed the boat.”

Spurs supporters haven’t seen their club lift a trophy since Juande Ramos guided his side to League Cup success in 2008.

OPINION

Shearer’s latest column does not make for an enjoyable read if you’re a Spurs fan. The pundit holds nothing back when giving his opinion on the potential consequences of their failure to win a trophy this season. Shearer really seems to be concerned that Spurs have missed their opportunity to lift silverware with their current squad, and it’s hard to argue with him. The likes of Hugo Lloris, Mousa Dembele, Toby Alderweireld aren’t getting any younger and it’s getting harder to imagine them winning a trophy with the club. While Shearer questions the futures of Kane and Alli, that’s less of an immediate concern. Both the midfielder and the forward are tied down to long contracts, so even if they’re considering their options, the club can easily take a tough stance and hold on to the pair.
