Poch: Alderweireld will play for Spurs again

|

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has declared that centre-back Toby Alderweireld will play for the club again this season amid heavy speculation about his future.

The 29-year-old enforcer is out of contract at Spurs in the summer of 2019, and it has begun to look increasingly likely he will be sold on at the end of the season after the club failed to agree a new deal.

Alderweireld has not played for Spurs since the 18th of February during an FA Cup tie against Rochdale, with his long-term hamstring injury given as the reason for his absence.

Pochettino has now responded to the latest questions about Alderweireld’s future at Spurs, saying that there had been ‘drama’ over the situation, and declaring that the rarely-seen centre-back would play for the club again before the end of the season.

OPINION

It will ease Tottenham nerves to see Alderweireld turn out for the club again before the end of the season, but the likelihood remains that he will leave this summer. The club’s decision to not meet his wage demands has seen him targeted by several of Europe’s top sides, and an exit is looking the likely option. That is not to say that a stay at Tottenham is out of the question, but looking at the wages he is reportedly demanding it is not likely that Daniel Levy will grant him his wishes.
