Newcastle United are showing interest in a summer swoop for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez, according to the Daily Mail

The newspaper report that there are a number of clubs interested in the Uruguay international, who is set to be a free agent this summer after four years at Hull.

The Mail claim that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is keen to strengthen his squad in the coming months and has warned owner Mike Ashley that he cannot keep working on a tight budget.

Hernandez has scored 36 goals in 99 appearances for Hull since joining from Palermo, and the 27-year-old could be of interest to multiple top-flight sides this summer.

The 27-year-old has been plagued by injuries this season, but has netted eight goals in 10 games in all competitions.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Yes and no.

Hernandez has a decent record with Hull, averaging just over a goal every three games. However, most of those have come in the Championship, with the 27-year-old netting just eight times in 49 top-flight games.

If he was able to maintain his overall scoring record at Newcastle, then it would be a good move, but questions remain over whether he could do that.

The fact that this would be a free transfer makes it more worthwhile, but Newcastle may look to do better this summer as they try and climb the table.

Likely to happen?

It is not mentioned how advanced Newcastle’s interest is, and that would suggest a move is not very close.

There will no doubt be other suitors domestically and abroad, and we will have to wait and see on this one.
