Newcastle United have won their last four consecutive Premier League games to end fears of relegation and the 2-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend lifted them up to 41 points.

Rafael Benitez’s side were just two points above the drop zone after a defeat to Liverpool at the beginning of March, but are now flying high in 10th position.

The Magpies have had several players such as Kenedy, Ayoze Perez and Jamaal Lascelles receive widespread praise for their roles in the club’s mini revival.

However, one key figure that has gone under the radar is defender Florian Lejeune.

It is easy to forget that the 26-year-old is playing in his first season of English football and really has made a positive impact at St James’ Park.

The centre-back has been unfortunate with injuries this campaign, but has managed to turn the corner in recent months and been pivotal for Benitez’s outfit.

He has completed 90 minutes in the last seven consecutive league matches and his partnership alongside Lascelles in the heart of defence has been impressive.

Lejeune has delivered some eye-catching displays with his no-nonsense approach and aerial ability.

The Frenchman has also proven that he is exceptionally talented off both feet and his range of passing is a real asset to Newcastle.

He is beginning to iron out silly mistakes from his game and has the making of a real top quality Premier League defender.

Benitez certainly has more work to do ahead of next season and should be backed in the transfer market to improve the squad, but the Lejeune-Lascelles defensive combination may already be a key part of the jigsaw.
